Review of Saxophone Brands

!±8± Review of Saxophone Brands

Which saxophone brands can you choose from when buying a new instrument? This article reviews the most common brand names.

The Big Four

The "big four" of saxophone manufacturers are Yamaha, Selmer, Yanagisawa and Keilwerth. Let's have a look at them.

Yamaha - One of the most popular brands, they are used by many of the world's leading saxophone players. Yamaha produces a wide range of instruments, including soprano, baritone, alto and tenor saxophones.

Selmer - The company's motto is "anticipate the future and embrace the past". This also shows in their design. Selmer's Series III are modern versions of classical instruments based on past heritage.

Yanagisawa - Together with Vito, this is a brand name from the Leblanc firm.

Keilwerth - This brand is considered to be one of the world's very best.

Other Saxophone Brands

Next to the "big four", other brands exist that may also be the perfect choice for you. Let's review some interesting details about a number of them in no particular order.

Martin - This firm produced a wide range of saxophones from 1919 to 1967 and it's one of the most wanted vintage brands for collectors.

Anaxa - Not as well known as some of the others, it's still a well built instrument that's very suitable for beginning players.

Prestini - Based in Italy, this company produces several musical instruments but they are perhaps best known for their saxophones. Nowadays it's a company of international fame.

Buescher - Gus Buescher, who was the company founder, produced the first American saxophone in 1888.

Alpine - Made from brass with post-to-rib construction, they are relatively cheap saxophones for students.

Monique - A Taiwanese brand that's inexpensive and typically better than the really cheap Chinese and Indian brands. But you have to use your discretion the quality of this brand of saxophones varies quite a bit.

Cecilio - One of the cheapest brands available on the market, they still offer excellent design and durability. As such they are one of the best price/quality bargains available.

Armstrong - Used a lot by beginning band players, this brand is best known for its flutes, piccolos and clarinets.

Conn - A well known brand for beginning players, that nevertheless has built quite an impressive line of instruments. Around for many years.

King - One of the most collectible of the vintage brands. Many King saxophones have engravings on the instrument's body, and even the keys.

Buffet - This brand has been around since 1866, which is just two decades after the invention of the saxophone by Alphonse Sax.

Learning to Play Saxophone - About the Instrument

!±8± Learning to Play Saxophone - About the Instrument

Saxophone, one of the best instruments to learn (in my opinion)! You will soon come to find that playing the saxophone is not only fun, but it also teaches discipline and the sense of achievement is priceless.

Note about Equipment

Some sax players spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about equipment...

Tiger Woods would still beat you at golf if he used crappy clubs.

But maybe not if he used a baseball bat and a volleyball.

So have make sure your saxophone, mouthpiece, reeds, etc are functioning. But DO NOT spend more time worrying about your equipment than actually playing & practicing.

The saxophone itself has a body and a neck. The mouthpiece goes on the neck and has a reed held on by a ligature. The mouthpiece, reeds, and ligature matter sometimes more than the horn itself.

Saxophone Reeds

The reed makes the sound in your saxophone through its vibration.

Saxophone reeds are made of a special cane that grows in only a few parts of the world. It is expensive and wears out in a few weeks. There are synthetic alternatives, but they don't sound as good.

Start with a softer reed (lower number). And you'll also want a softer reed if you have a mouthpiece that is more open. Beginners can start with number 2 and experiment from there.

Saxophone Mouthpiece

The basic idea of mouthpiece position on a sax is that pushing the mouthpiece farther down on the cork will make your intonation higher while pulling it out will make your intonation lower.

To quote Jimmy Haag, "You are basically playing a long tube when you play a saxophone. Saxophone is all about the speed of the air like any wind instrument. The length of the tube determines its harmonics. Since EVERYONE has a different throat, mouth, teeth, and tongue, it is a truly individual journey to find out what works for you. I meet a lot of people who are looking for a standard but in fact there is only one way that will work for you."

So it's not as simple as pushing the mouthpiece on farther or pulling it out more.

The temperature and the environment affect intonation too- if it's hot outside the air will move faster and the sax will be sharper, if its cold- it will tend to be flat.

And a saxophone in tune on one note will not necessarily be in tune on another note, if not adjustments are made by the player. With practice, you'll develop control and these things will happen subconsciously.

Ligature

The ligature holds the reed on the saxophone mouthpiece. It makes some differences. But you probably don't need to spend ridiculous amounts of money on a diamond encrusted ligature.

Saxophone

There are four 'big' brands of saxophone:

Selmer, Keilwerth, Yamaha, and Yanagisawa.

They all make professional horns.

The Selmer Mark VI is the most famous type of saxophone, they stopped making them, so the Mark VI's can be very pricey these days. But many professionals swear by them. Not every Mark VI is still in great condition though.

There are some other brands that make decent horns. Be careful if they are imported and have soft metal. And try them out before you buy them.

Saxophones have features such as rolled tone holes and a high F# key. In general many of the advancements in instrument making have been adopted by most saxophone companies.

Types of Saxophone

When you're starting off, play an alto or tenor. Alto's a bit smaller and easier for a child to carry.

Soprano is smaller than alto, but its tone is harder to control.

And baritone is larger than tenor.

Tenor saxophone is what most famous saxophone players favor although some preferred alto and there are a handful of saxophone players who mostly play soprano or bari.

Musicality!

Remember that you need to play music on your saxophone, not just have nice equipment.

A bad driver in a Ferrari is not impressive.

Sometimes problems you have with playing are actually because of the instrument, reed, etc. But more times they are not.

Types of Saxophones

!±8± Types of Saxophones

Saxophones come in varying shapes and sizes. There are many types. The inventor of the saxophone, Antoine-Joseph (Adolphe) Sax patented 14 of them in 1846. They were the E flat sopranino, F sopranino, B flat soprano, C soprano, E flat alto, F alto, B flat tenor, C tenor, E flat baritone, B flat bass, C bass, E flat contrabass, F contrabass and subcontrabass. While the subcontrabass was patented by Adolphe Sax he never built it. Models of the instrument have been created but they were unplayable. Other types were created since then including the C-melody saxophone, Conn-O-Sax, F Mezzo Soprano, F baritone, and the sopranissimo (nick-named the world's smallest saxophone or soprillo).

For the purpose of this article, we shall focus on the four types of saxophones widely used today. From the smallest instrument with the highest pitch to the largest instrument with the lowest pitch, they are the soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxophone.

The soprano saxophone is pitched in the key of B flat. It is one octave higher than the tenor. Some versions are curved while others are straight. Most of the sopranos of today are made straight or straight with a slight bend in the neck, bell or both. While there are curved ones today, these were more common during the 1930s. They look like small altos and have a richer, more "saxophone-like" sound than straight sopranos. In terms of intonation, straight sopranos are usually better. If you are just starting out on the saxophone, a soprano saxophone would not be the best choice for you. Try an alto instead. Sopranos are generally seen as the hardest saxophones to play and master. The small mouthpiece and difficult tuning can make life hard when you first start playing. Also, there is not much music written for this type of saxophone as compared to the alto for instance. The soprano is very popular in Jazz music. Popular players include Jazz musicians like Sidney Bechet, Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane, and Joe Farrell, as well as smooth Jazz saxophonists like Kenny G and Dave Koz.

The other type of saxophone we shall look at is the alto saxophone. It is pitched in the key of E flat and plays exactly one octave higher than the baritone. This is a medium sized saxophone and one of the most commonly played. The alto is the perfect choice for a beginner because of its comfortable shape and size. Later on, an alto player can always move on to the other types of saxophones since the fingering for all saxophones is basically the same. Compared to the tenor, it's easier to play. Some altos are very cheap to buy and rent. Most altos are curved in a backwards "J" shape but some of them come in a straight model with a slightly tipped bell. The alto is very common in jazz bands and many symphonic bands as well. Popular manufacturers include Yanagisawa, Selmer, SML, Vito, Cannonball, Jupiter, and Yamaha. The role played by the alto during the Swing Era cannot be ignored; the instrument played a leading role in the evolution of Jazz. One of the most influential bebop pioneers of the 1940s was Charlie Parker, an alto saxophonist.

Next in line we have the tenor saxophone pitched in the key of B flat. It plays exactly one octave lower than the soprano saxophone. This type of saxophone is larger than the alto, the mouthpiece is larger, and the rods and tone holes are longer. Due to the length of its neck it is very prone to damage. The instrument is popularly believed to be the signature instrument of modern Jazz, but is also used in rock and pop as well. While most beginners start and should start on the alto saxophone, if you prefer the tenor and think you can handle it, by all means go for it. It is really just a bigger version of the alto. Both instruments use the same fingerings. I probably would not advise children to start on the tenor, but for adults it's perfectly fine. Famous tenor saxophone players include Coleman Hawkins, John Coltrane, Lester Young, and Sonny Rollins.

The final type of saxophone we shall take a look at is the baritone. This is the largest among the common types of saxophones. It is pitched in the key of E flat and plays exactly one octave lower than the alto. Music is written not in the bass clef, but the treble clef. Unlike the other types of saxophone, the baritone saxophone normally comes with a very beneficial low A fingering. Since this is an E flat instrument, low A translates to concert C. Actually, there are two types of baritone, one ranging to a low A and the other to a low B flat. Due to size of this instrument, it is very difficult to play and carry around, especially for children. It is the most abused of the saxophone family and is very prone to problems like tone hole damage, rod damage, body twists, and large dents. In addition, it is very expensive. Notable past and recent performers include Pepper Adams, Hamiet Bluiett, Harry Carney, Gerry Mulligan, John Surman, and Joe Temperley.

Saxophones for Sale

!±8± Saxophones for Sale

Discount offers on saxophones are occasionally announced by music stores, wholesale dealers and owners of used saxophones. These sales present the ideal occasions to buy a saxophone of your choice at a reasonable price.

Music stores are the best locations to look for a saxophone. Salespeople in music stores are friendly and you can check the saxophone to ensure that the store gives you an honest deal. The music store usually holds both old and new saxophones. A pawn shop also sells saxophones at reduced prices. But it is better to avoid purchasing from such outlets, especially if you are not aware of the saxophone quality and prices. Various websites on the Internet help to compare prices of all kinds of saxophones on the market.

It is also advisable to approach people who are selling their own used saxophones. They can offer a low price for the saxophone. You can locate these people by watching advertisements in magazines or on the Internet. You can even reduce the price of the used saxophones through an effective bargaining. The materials used and craftsmanship of saxophones are usually outstanding. Used saxophones prices are determined by the brand, age and condition of the saxophone. You should be aware of the original price of the same saxophone available in the market before buying a used saxophone. Whatever the model and the method of purchase, a saxophone must be thoroughly checked for damage before the purchase.

There are different types of saxophones available at different prices. Some shops offer discount price or wholesale price or cheap price for saxophones. Saxophones of Yamaha, Yanagisawa, Jupiter, Selmer, Trevor James, Elkhart and Buffet are available. But there may be slight differences in prices.. For stock clearance some shops offer discount prices even for new saxophones. Over production will be one of the reasons for this. Sometimes new shops offer a price reduction for saxophones in order to attract new customers.
